After filing for divorce , many couples choose to allow one spouse to stay in their mutual home, while the other uproots in search of a new place to live. There are a number of factors that determine which spouse gets to stay in the home—the couples’ preference, the size and length of their mortgage obligation or rental lease, the nature of their child custody arrangement—but the fate of a shared home always plays a central role in divorce negotiations. Sometimes, though, house issues are not permanently resolved during the initial divorce process. Take, for example, the case of Tony Alleyne. Alleyne, a British citizen, separated from his wife through a formal divorce in 1994. In a sign of mutual understanding, Alleyne’s wife, who owned the apartment in which they lived, allowed Alleyne to remain in their apartment as a renter after their divorce. Granted, British divorce laws are different from American laws, but such an arrangement certainly happens in the United States, as well. It puts the renter at a bit of a disadvantage, but often works well for both parties. In this case, however, Alleyne did something strange during his tenure in the apartment. Three years after his wife left the home, Alleyne transformed the interior of his residence into a Star Trek-themed paradise, according to a report from the Examiner. Sources indicate that, over a period of 10 years, Alleyne morphed the apartment’s interior so that it served as a near-exact replica of the Voyager spaceship from Star Trek fame. Apparently, the craftsmanship was quite good, and Alleyne was thrilled that he had crafted his own space adventure in the middle of the British Isles. His plan, however, was soon foiled. Recently, Alleyne’s ex-wife, the owner of the apartment, announced her intentions to sell the home, which will undoubtedly require her former husband to dismantle his prized creation. While this story is indeed bizarre, it also reveals the potential difficulties face by divorcing couples who retain some sort of professional relationship, whether it is as business partners or as a landlord and tenant. Keeping a business relationship after a divorce can be trick, but it’s not necessarily impossible. Careful planning and good-faith negotiating can help couples navigate financial deals after a divorce . Potential divorcees, however, should be advised that turning your ex-wife’s apartment into a Star Trek-themed spaceship could ultimately end in pain and disappointment. Consider yourself warned.
